There were jetskiers, trailer sailors, steel boats, wooden boats, production boats, small, big, power, luxury boats and us, all anchored in and around the tip of Russell Island in expectations of the weekend ahead.

We were there with our beautiful yacht, Jubilation, a 2019 Beneteau 41.1 Oceanis anchored just off the shores of Russell Island at the Canaipa Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron. The RQYS Canaipa is an extension to their main club, the RQYS Manly and all members can visit and enjoy the wonderful facilities, including the BBQ area, the shower/toilet amenities, the camp kitchen and the delightful, big welcoming swimming pool.
Canaipa is a great location to anchor when sailing/cruising in Moreton Bay and can easily be reached within a few hours sail from Manly

Each year the RQYS Sail Cruising Club holds their annual Australia Day celebrations here and this year we joined them. The Sail co-ordinators of the Cruising Club, Dean and Sally, started the weekend off with a scheduled radio call, and we all checked in and advised our location and expected time of arrival at the RQYS Canaipa anchorage.

John and I had left Manly early and enjoyed a glorious sail across the Bay, it was a beautiful calm day, with a gentle 10kts northerly breeze guiding us south to our destination. Lying on the foredeck I watched as we were joined by so many other yachts and boats of various sizes, zipping and zooming across the Bay to their planned destinations to enjoy the wonderful long weekend on the water.

After the radio call, we enjoyed relaxing onboard our own boat. There is never any hurry when cruising, it's all about relaxing and enjoying the locations and the peacefulness of it all. With the swim deck down and the cockpit all set up with the cushions and shade, we sat back enjoying a delicious lunch and watched as the other Cruising Club boats arrived.

The first activity at 2pm, was a game of cricket, so packing up our lunch and into the tender, we zipped ashore, signing ourselves into the member's logbook. We were immediately welcomed ashore by Kevin the Canaipa caretaker and introduced to Dean and Sally who we had already spoken too on the radio call earlier.

We immediately feel welcomed and relaxed and we know we are in for a great weekend ahead..

Cricket is not my strength! I stepped up to the batting crease and stood as if I was playing baseball, determined to at least hit the ball. My bowler was a young 13-year boy from one of the powerboats. He was good and I hit the ball and all I could hear was the crowd yelling 'run', so I did!

I was already out of balance when I took my first step and somehow made it to the halfway mark of the pitch, but as I reached for the opposite crease I could feel my body fly through the air and crash to the ground, hitting my nose on the cricket bat as it bounced up to greet me.

OMG now I am laughing so much, as I cannot believe what just happened. I throw my hand over the crease as the ball is retrieved and thrown back and I am declared safe by the umpire. Phew, what a run! I give everyone the thumbs up as my nose throbs and the tears run down my face, still laughing I play out my turn.

After the match, we head for the pool for a cool down and then taking our tender head back to our yacht to relax and prepare for the evening ahead.
The evening was a delicious roast buffet served by Kevin at the camp kitchen. John and I met some wonderful people and share stories of sailing and other cruising club events.
As the evening progresses a variation to the 2 up game commences and everyone is laughing and joining in. Hands-on heads for heads or hands-on bums (your own) for tails. It was a great night and we met some wonderful people. I was even invited out to go wake-boarding the next day, which I immediately said yes too.

The next morning, Donna who we met last night arrives on her jetski from her powerboat and says jump on, so launching myself from the handy swim deck, I jump on for my first ever jet ski ride. It was a blast and Donna took me for a jet ski around some of the inlets and bays that surround Russell Island. From the Jetski, I jump into their powerboat and then into the water. It has been a long time since I have wake-boarded. Sean makes sure I am OK, and I give the thumbs up, the powerboat launches forward and desperately trying to remain in position, I tell myself I can do this and I do! I pop up out of the water and just like that I am wake-boarding again. It was a great blast around the bay and an amazing opportunity to have. Thank you to this wonderful family who took me jet skiing and wakeboarding, very much appreciated.
It's a beautiful day and after breakfast, there's a tug of war game, which was taken very seriously, then time for a swim, before the throng throwing competition, also taken seriously.
The day ends with a bring a plate dinner and a presentation evening.

Monday we start the day on the rising tide and stopping for lunch at Peel Island, we enjoy a wonderful sail home to the RQYS, Manly. What a wonderful weekend and we are now looking forward to our next Cruising Club event on Moreton Bay.

We are John and Tania Ryan, yachtshare owners of Jubilation and when we are on her she is 100% ours. Coming back in at 4pm on Monday, we packed up our belongings and head for home. Our yacht is then cleaned and re-fuelled for us, this is just one of the benefits of sharing with yachtshare.com.au
It was fast, it was crowded and I was caught!

I went on to spend the next 3 months locked away in the South China Sea and no-one knew....

There are moments in your life, when you think back and clutch at those seconds of time and think, what if... what if I had done this, what if this had not have happened, where would I be now. Who would I be now!

For me, there are probably 3 defining moments, where life takes a distinctive turn. Where one minute you are cruising along in life and then everything changes. For me, these moments are, the decision to leave home, the decision to sell my waterfront property in Queenstown and the decision to rob a bank. Each moment now defines who I am and each moment in that instance could have easily been another decision that would have pushed me to another direction.

It was summer in Queenstown NZ, beautiful clear days and cool evenings when we made the decision to sell our house and go on an adventure. What that adventure was, we were unclear, we were looking for a change, we were looking for a new life and selling the house seemed the first logical step. The sale was quick and easy and just like that we were homeless, we hadn't planned the next step and so we loaded everything we could into the ute, we sold everything else and drove north.

Arriving into Nelson on the Tasman Bay, north of the South Island, we moved into our new home, on the beachfront and set about making a new life for ourselves. Whatever drove us to do this was not settled by our move to Nelson, and we were restless. Our new home was by the yacht club and each evening we would walk along the beach to watch the sunset over the ocean.

It was there we conjured up the idea of buying a yacht and sailing off into the wild blue yonder. It was through meeting other wonderful yachties as we strolled the streets of Nelson each evening that their reality became our dream. You can see we were lost and looking for direction. Looking back now, we should have gone in our own direction, however even then we didn't know what that was, so together we wandered.

Eventually taking us to Hervey Bay in Australia. We are now renting another house on the beachfront and this time found ourselves watching an eclectic group of people come together each afternoon kiteboarding. There we found friends, a group we bonded too and we took to kite-boarding like fish to water, spending the warm winter months zipping across the bay and evenings partying on the beach. It was one of those a great memorable, never to be repeated summers.

One day relaxing in the garden of our rented beachfront home, we had a call. Walking over to the phone, attached to the wall on a small side table, a chap called Ted heard we were looking for a boat (we still do not know how he had found our number or that we were even interested in a boat, that remains a mystery) and he had one for sale. After a small sea trail, we brought Ted's boat, a 38ft Laurie Davidson, Single masthead sloop, Cavalier with a 20hp bukh engine and a liferaft.

We were off and set our passage north along the Queensland coast. We met the best people and had an amazing adventure. We also learned what living together as a couple was like 24/7 in a 38ft long boat and there were some good barney's. This was our shared dream and neither of us was leaving it. On our return South we met a couple, who changed our direction. They ask if we would be keen to join them on the SAIL Indonesia regatta leaving in July from Darwin. So, we did! There were some changes to our plans and to our expenses, however, we set about preparing the boat.

We were part of a large flotilla sailing out of Australia to Kupang and onto Indonesia. It was an adventure, exactly what we had been looking for. We were sailing the islands of Indonesia, with no plans, just each day where would we go to next. Our only date was to be in Bali for the ceremony held by the regatta. Our days were spent island exploring, fishing, finding food, discovering villages, it was a wonderful 2 months from Darwin to Bali.

We left the regatta in Bali and after a 6-week sail, we arrived in Sandakan, Borneo. Wanting to explore Borneo, the local yacht club told us about the Kinabatangan River adventures and we booked ourselves on. It was a 3 night/4day safari where we saw the Orangatungs and Proboscis monkeys as well as birdlife that was surprising and beautiful.

On the last day, we needed to stay in a local B&B before we could catch our bus back to Sandakan. The B&B did not take credit cards and as we had no cash, we were stuck. The owner of the B&B, Annie, said one of her boys would scooter me into the main village and there was an ATM there I could withdraw cash. I hopped on the back of the scooter, leaving my partner at the B&B and headed into the night.

The street was dark, barely lit by the glow of a small street light. The ATM had a small queue and as I lined up a few people fell in behind me. It was my turn at the ATM, taking my one and only source of cash, a credit card, (I had sailed for the last 2.5 months with 1 bank card!) I popped my card into the machine and fumbling in the dark the machine sucked it in upside down. No sooner had it swallowed it, the machine went dark and closed down. A new light appeared advising me it was 'out of order' and to visit at another time. The people behind me sighed and disappeared into the night.

Panicking I didn't know what to do. We now had no way to pay the B&B, and how was I going to get my card back. Scootering back I was feeling sick about what had happened and when I explained this, there was some frustration about our newly created situation.

Annie canceled the bus and we planned our day the next day. First, we would go back to the bank, get my card, pay Annie and then catch a later bus back to Sandakan. Easy!

9.30am we walk into the already crazy crowded bank, is it payday or something... we shuffle our way to the counter and I innocently advise the cashier that the ATM swallowed my card last night and can I have it back, please. We are asked to wait and are seated in the centre of the banks waiting area. Slowly we became the centre of attention as everybody has to check us out just sitting there. After a short time, a lovely lady greets us and asks us to follow her and we are escorted into the bank's secure back office. Her name is Wayan, and she sits us down at her office desk and greets us pleasantly. We check out our surroundings, there are about 8 desks in the back office with as many people working there. The back office leads to the front counter and the door Wayan has brought us through has a keypad lock on it, a large Indonesia guard with a friggin big rifle stands guard at the only exit door, the one we have just come through.

The first thing Wayan says, is she cannot just give the card back, she will need to call our bank in Australia and send it back there and they will send me a new card. Wayan asks for 2 forms of identification and hesitantly I hand her my driver's license and an old work ID card, she accepts both. I explain that this is impossible as we live on a boat and there is nowhere for the bank to send me a new card. I am willing myself to stay calm. I can feel the sweat beads on my forehead, my breathing quickens, just breathe I tell myself, I can get us out of this!

Wayan, leaves the desk and goes to get my credit card, she has left through the secure door, the one she needs to keypad entry in, she just opens it like a normal door to exit. Noted!

Now in front of her is my credit card, my driver's license, and my old work ID and she picks up the phone to call the bank in Australia. My brain is working through the options, all I know is I cannot let the bank in Australia cancel this card. I can see it and I am sure I just need to sweetly cajole the lovely Wayan and she will hand my card back to me and off we will go.
I ask to speak to the bank hoping to delay the inevitable and talking to the bank they ask me if I wish to cancel the card as it has not been reported lost and I advise no and after further chatter I hand the phone back to Wayan.

While this has been happening, the big guard with his big rifle, looking very bored and needing some action is just wandering around the back office. My partner decides he needs the toilet and the guard smiles with the rifle across his chest now and escorts my partner to the men's. This is the last time I see him in the bank.

When we had walked into the Bank, we brought with us our backpacks and a small camera bag, and they are sitting near the only exit door on the floor, piled together. I have no plan, all I know is now I need to get my card and get out of here.

I sit alone now with Wayan, we have hung up from the bank and she advises me on the next steps. She will need to photocopy my bank card and send this back to the bank in Australia. My 3 cards are laid out on the desk in front of her, less than an arms reach, I sit back desperately trying to remain calm. A fellow colleague comes over and asks Wayan about a customer she is serving on the front counter. Wayan knows how to resolves this and without further thought, she says she will just be a minute and walks away from her desk, away from the cards. The guard is over by the mens toilet waiting for my partner, the only exit door opens as someone walks through.

It's now or never. I make my move, I am fast, I don't hesitate, for a person who struggles to have a plan, I have one now. I grab my three cards, sweep up all our bags in my arms and walk out the door. I walk calmly as I can, I do not look at the guard. Suddenly, I am in the main bank area and between myself and the main exit door, there are about 15 people, although it feels like a thousand. I stand tall using my foreigness to get through and they seem to step aside as I stride out and fall down the steps into the blaring sunlight. I am out and I am not going back in.

Now just to get my partner out. I set the bags down just 5 meters from the bank's front doors and wait. There are no sirens, no police, no Wayan. First out is the guard and he pleads with a very solemn voice and asks me to follow him back into the bank, I graciously decline keep my breathing under control. 20 minutes go by and my partner has not re-appeared, I am standing there hot and thirsty waiting, praying now that they will release him.

He has come out of the toilet and found the back office of the bank in mayhem. Wayan is screaming at the guard, the guard with his shoulders dropped acknowledges he has failed at his only job. My partners is asked to sit and not to move, or they will call the police. After the guard returns without me, Wayan now calls in her manager and there is a lot of discussions. Eventually, Wayan comes out to talk with me and asks me I need to go back in with her or they will call the police.

I play the game and advise her I am not going back into the bank and if they need to, to call the police. I stand my ground and do not try to frustrate her any further, I give the moment between us some silence and Wayan turns and heads back into the bank, leaving me on the footpath. 10 minutes later she is back out with a clipboard and some sort of form I need to sign. I sign!

He comes out like a raging tiger and asks me to think about what I just did. I let him vent. We hail a taxi and back to Annies B&B to pay her and then we head to the bus station and catch a bus back to Sandakan and back to the boat. It's been a long day.

We spend the next 3 months floating around Borneo and Palawan in the South China Seas, trapped by our need to stay on the boat together and struggle through our plans of what to do next. Its typhoon season and we have left it to late to go north or south. Christmas and New Year come and go and eventually I just pack my bags, head to the airport and fly home. I don't see our boat, Port n' Starboard for another 3 years. My blog, How I nearly die in the South China Seas, tells you of my reunion with Port n' Starboard.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">One reason is the many islands and inlets that allow for good anchoring. Where you can leave one beautiful anchorage with your coffee in hand and head to the next anchorage and be there sipping aperitif by sunset. No other coast in Australia offers such convenient day passages in such beautiful warm waters.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">How many islands dot our beautiful Queensland coastline.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">We are all aware of our resort islands, like Hamilton, Hayman, Moreton Island, as well as our previous resort islands, such as Lindeman, Brampton, Dunk, Heron, and Great Keppel Island to name a few; there, are many more. In fact, there are over 1900 islands that dot our Queensland Coastline. Every yachtie has their favourite, which if they are lucky enough, return to every time they sail the coast.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">This year John and I, along with our friend Jojo, sailed from Airlie Beach to Manly RQYS, on our new yacht, Jubilation.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">A beautiful Beneteau 41.1 Oceanis, which arrived from France in March this year. Unwrapped in front of us, with the other yachtshare owners.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">How did we, John and Tania become part of this great group of owners and then be offered this amazing opportunity to sail the coast of Queensland in our holidays?
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">We could never have done this if we owned our own yacht, as we both work full-time and do not have 4-6 months to take off and sail her to the Whitsundays and back again!
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">If we chartered a yacht in the Whitsundays, there are rules and limitations and sailing the coast of Queensland is not one of them.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Would we ever get the experience to sail the coast of Queensland together?
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">What if we quit work, spent all our money on a boat and it's not for us?
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">What would we do if something went wrong?
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">And if we did commit to it with our own boat, then what do we do after the journey?
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Answer to all this was
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">1 - not do anything and wonder or...
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">2 - buy a share in a yacht and share the experiences with other like-minded people and have the support of the Yachtshare team to look after us, if we needed them. That's is how we came to be on Jubilation and experience this journey together. It works so well for us, we love it and are still in awe we just completed this amazing journey together.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">It was great to see and watch the stories of all our fellow sharers who had the yacht before us this winter. Bill, Dave and Diane, sailed her out of Manly RQ mid-August and headed to Hamilton Island.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Yachtshare was there to meet them and give the boat a double check before they raced her in Hamilton Island Race Week.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">It's so encouraging to see the commitment and passion our fellow sharers have for the yacht, each owner treats her as their own when they are on-board.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">We have a saying, we own 10% of Jubilation and to us she is 100% ours when we are on board. It is a shared commitment between all of us who share in Jubilation.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Our planning had been assisted with another of the Jubilation Yachtsharers, Dean. He kindly shared his knowledge of the coast with us, which was gratefully received.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">We had read and studied the charts and also purchased the Alan Lucas "Cruising the Coral Coast' book. We were ready.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Jubilation had been fully cleaned, serviced and re-fuelled and once we had arrived in Airlie and shopped for food and supplies, we did the last check of her ourselves. A moment I always appreciate is, when we let go of the shorelines and head out of the harbour. It is always such a wonderful feeling.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Airlie Beach was enjoying one of those stunningly blue days with clear bright skies and gentle calm seas.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">We set the headsail and watch her bow cut through the water as we headed around Pioneer Rocks into South Molle Passage, pointing her south.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">The northerlies were warm and light, a nice 8-10kts, just enough to prepare us for the evening ahead.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">We put the music on through the deck speakers and talked about the night sail and discussed important things like our dinner and what we hoped to experience in the next few days.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Watching our first sunset at sea, we enjoyed the quiet and the sounds of Jubilation cutting through the water.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">On a constant lookout for sea life, we all had our fingers crossed for sightings of dolphins or even turtles.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">We watched as other yachts found anchorages for the night as we passed islands like Long Island and South Molle Island heading out of the Whitsunday passage towards Lindeman Island.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">We set our auto-pilot to track us towards Scawfell Island and as we approached we changed tack towards the Percy Islands.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Each of us found a comfy position at the helm when it was our turn for the watches. We started with 2-hour watches, however as the night turned to the glow of the morning we found we were all on deck too excited to stay below, as we watched the Percy Islands come into view.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Sweeping around to Middle Percy we dropped anchor in Whites Bay, and relaxed. Dropping the motorized swim deck, we all jumped into the sea to wash the salt from the previous night, followed by a freshwater shower.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Reminding ourselves what a great boat Jubilation is, as John had a freshwater shower on the swim deck and Jojo and I took turns to shower below. The best shower is after a night sail.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Jojo raced ashore and was soon talking to fellow yachties, who shared some great anchoring advice for the night ahead. So after a wonderful BBQ brunch, we relaxed on deck taking in the beautiful surroundings before we motored around to West Bay.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">West bay is full of yachtie history, with the famed A-frame hut. <span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">It was a beautiful evening in the bay and we spent some time ashore near the hut talking to a few of the other yachties at anchor there for the evening.
We sailed into Pancake Creek in the middle of the night and one comment which will stay with me, is John navigating us in with advice, "steer for the lighthouse"!
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">As we approach, the outline of the creek's entrance appears and we motor through the small heads and into the Creek, quickly finding a place to anchor, we collapse into bed and sleep through to the morning.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">This is one place that holds great memories for us, on a previous visit many years ago, we met some wonderful friends who are still great friends today.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Pancake Creek and Bustard Headlight house have a fascinating history and highly recommend the book by Stuart Buchanan, who was the last lighthouse keeper of Bustard head, "Tragedies of a Lighthouse", it makes great reading.
Tin Can Bay, was not a planned destination on our route, however needing more fuel we decided this would be the place to re-fuel. We started the day from Rooney Pt with plans to anchor that evening near InSkip Pt.

Re-fuelling at Tin Can Bay is a story to itself. We had help coming alongside the fuel berth by some lovely fellow yachties, who kindly caught our lines and shared their story with us.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Leaving from Tin Can Bay we headed to the Wide Bay Bar and thanks to the helpful advice from the Tin Can Bay VMR (Volunteer Marine Rescue), we crossed the bar uneventfully and set sail for RQYS Manly.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">It was our last sunset together, our last dinner at sea, we all wanted to stay on deck, but tiredness prevailed and the watches kicked in. The last few hours we stayed vigilant coming into Moreton Bay, and as we approached the leads we had to kick in those last reserves of energy until we safely tied up alongside.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">This sailing experience gave us confidence in our navigation skills, boat, risk and safety management, passage planning, communication to VMR and Coast Guard Queensland as well as sail handling, teamwork and decision making. This journey has answered so many questions for us and shown us we do love this and we <span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">are continually grateful for the amazing opportunities <a href="https://www.yachtshare.com.au/" style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;" target="_blank">Yachtshare<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"> has given us.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">We would not have been able to do this trip any other way and certainly not in the luxury and safety of Jubilation. Knowing how well she is looked after and managed, knowing her power and the technology of her navigation system. There is also an additional benefit in having the other owners to ask and share their experience with, and this continues every day with <a href="https://www.yachtshare.com.au/" style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;" target="_blank">Yachtshare<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">.

In one day we upgraded from our Jeanneau 36.i Sun Odyssey to our dream yacht a beautiful sparkling new Beneteau 41.1,

how was it that simple?

Yachtshare made it very easy for us to upgrade.

Here are 3 things we did 'not' have to consider:-

1 Selling our current vessel, as Yachtshare offered us a buy-back option, which made it very convenient for us to upgrade.

2. Traveling; searching; negotiating on purchasing our new vessel. Yachtshare did all this for us and we are now new owners in our dream yacht.

3. Paper-work, marina fees; Insurance; sale deeds - all this was taken care for us by Yachtshare. All we did was make the decision to change to Jubilation.

Once our decision was made the change from Inspiration, a 36.1 Sun Odyssey to Jubilation a 41.1 Beneteau was actioned in a day.

From there our on-boarding included a 2-day orientation and induction weekend with our Sailing Instructor, Damon organized for us by Yachtshare.

The weekend was learning about our new yacht; her navigation gear; her safety gear; her electrics and engine. We were loving what we were learning, she was so easy and so new. It's like buying a new car and checking out what all the buttons do and how loud is her stereo and more...

Next, we had to practice leaving and returning her into her pen in the marina.

Damon showed us some great maneuvers in a variety of potential weather conditions.

Both John and I practiced coming along-side as a couple, taking it in turns on the helm or on the lines.

Damon had some really great tricks to make it easier and no more jumping ashore on the approach!

We even practiced reversing her in and we love the new bow-thruster, how did we ever 'park', without this little gem before. It is like micro-maneuvering her, you feel like a professional as you guide her in or out of the pen.

The next day we set sail with an NNE breeze and headed south to Peel Island to Horseshoe Bay. Her mainsail zipped up the main mast at a press of a button, her jib unfurled with gusto and when we tacked, it was calm and a very relaxed manoeuvered. No more rushing to pull in this sheet or that. There's so much more room, she is so comfortable and doesn't heel as much as our last yacht. She is just a joy to be on board out on the Bay on.

We tuned our phones in through the speakers and relaxed as the music gently surrounded us, under full sail we glided across the bay.

We tested her sails, tweaked them and checked which lines went where and discovered all her little nuances, which makes her such a joy to sail.

We are continually amazed at just how beautifully designed Jubilation is and we kept looking at each other in awe, that we now share owners in such a glorious yacht, our audacious dream goal.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Australia day weekend 2019 will be remembered as one of those spectacular Moreton Bay weekends, where the gulls were swooping the seas, the skies were brilliant blue and the winds were perfect at a gorgeous 12-15kts N/NE, we were set for an adventure on Inspiration. <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">There is no better public announcement system, than beautiful weather on a Public Holiday to have nearly all the boat owners in S.E. <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Lunchtime brought us into Horseshoe Bay, and we motored in amongst all the floating vessels. From the million dollar luxury power launches, the myriad of yachts; power boats; jet skiers; hobi catters, kayakers, anything that was afloat was there <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">to relax and celebrate Australia Day in Horseshoe Bay. <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Sailing was an extension of her, Kay was born into a nautical family,
the youngest of four girls and was taken by her father sailing "from the day she was born".
The idea of sailing around the world came to her when New Zealand's Naomi (now Dame Naomi) James was forced to stop on her 1978 attempt to circumnavigate the globe.

Buying your own yacht can be a very expensive and daunting task.

Financially, it’s a big responsibility to look after the costs on your own.
There’s also a large time commitment required to ensure proper maintenance of your vessel.
Yachtshare will manage these commitments on your behalf.
By becoming a syndicate member, you’ll only outlay a portion of the cost of capital cost.
You’ll have access to your yacht to sail throughout the year, but you won’t need to spend precious time maintaining and cleaning your yacht.
You can simply enjoy your time out on the water without all the hassle.

Here are 8 bonus's we never knew would happen because we said YES to Yachtshare.

3. Yachtshare BIGGEST bonus is it allows us to go Sailing or Boating without the hassles of owning our own boat.

We looked for over 2 years to purchase our own boat, researching the marina fees, the insurance and what type of yacht we could in fact afford.

We knew we wanted to be out sailing, but how!We found Yachtshare through a friend who introduced us, and at first, we thought, OK, this is great but not for us!!How wrong we were, a year later after lots of research and hitting the financial calculator, we could not have argued with ourselves more.Yachtshare is the most financial way to become a boat owner and still enjoy all our other life's activities.We do not feel guilty when we are unable to go out sailing because of a work, family and life commitments!

4. The calendar is another fantastic bonus.

We purchased our 1/10th share. It's a one-off cost!

It's not an annual fee, it's a SHARE. We are now a part of 10 owners who, have purchased our share in our yacht and we have 33 days guaranteed every year.

With the unique online booking system, all the owners can feel confident in the balanced and equally distributed use of their boat – whilst still capturing the essence of our owner’s freedom.

The access to the calendar for the next quarter is released 2 months prior and every one has equal opportunity to select their preferred dates.It's all very fair and civilized.There is still availability across the Christmas and New Year's Eve season.

5. Can we have more than 33 days?

Our first question was answered with a resounding yes, from all the other yachts shareowners we met through our social morning breakfast, held at the beginning of each year.

They are called 'Stand-by' days and all the yachts shareowners have taken advantage of these bonus free days.How it works, let's say no-one has the yacht booked for tomorrow. At 4:00pm today we can log into our owner's calendar and book the next day.The stand-by days not deducted from our 33 days, it's a FREE Bonus Day - there's no additional fee.Since we have started with Yachtshare, just 11 months ago, we have easily had over 50 days sailing. It's that good.

6. Some of the benefits that Yachtshare offers to us this Winter was:

We sailed our own yacht that we are trained to use and we know inside out. We are not getting onto an unknown boat and learning on the job.

Our yacht is privately registered and is not a charter boat. We can take our yacht anywhere on the Great Barrier Reef within the time constraints of our booking. We are not constricted by the boundaries and conditions of rental yachts.We can join other shareowners for delivery passages from Manly to Roselyn Bay, Roselyn Bay to Airlie Beach and return.We can visit Hamilton Island and the world famous Whitehaven Beach in style and comfort.

7. Be the envy of every boat owner!

We don’t queue at the fuel wharf.

We don’t spend 90 minutes hosing and cleaning the boat.And we don’t book and supervise the mechanics and tradespeople who keep our investment cruising in perfect condition. Life isn’t like that for other boat owners, but as one of our boat shareowners, you’re getting the boating lifestyle at a tenth of the cost.

8. Invitations

We all wish to be out on the water and some of our yacht owners need crew on their booked days.

Through the calendar, we can invite each other out.

We have been invited out for Wednesday WAGS day nearly every Wednesday, there's always room for one more.

This weekend we had the joy of being part of the Queensland Beneteau Cup and French Yacht Challenge, as Inspiration is a French-built boat.

It wasn't our day, however, the yachtshare owner who had the boat booked needed extra hands on board and with 3 yachtshare owners on board for the day, we all enjoyed our yacht.

There are more opportunities to be out on the water than ever before

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: x-large;">Sharing a yacht is one of the smartest ways to get out on the water.

Find out why so many people are now buying into a shared yacht ownership program.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Sharing is defined as “to partake of, use, experience, occupy, or enjoy with others”. But why is it actually better to share than to have something just for yourself?

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: x-large;">1. Save Money!

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Yachts are expensive to purchase and maintain.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

Sharing the cost of purchasing and maintaining a yacht through a syndicated ownership program, will afford you access to a much larger and newer boat than what is otherwise affordable.
In addition to sharing the regular costs of boat ownership such as berthing, insurance, registration, anti-fouling, and engine servicing, you can share the costs of expensive repairs or improvements with your fellow syndicate owners.
100% of the benefit of the repairs and improvements is offered for a fraction of the cost.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; text-align: start;"> 2. Lives are busy, save time!

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; text-align: start;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; text-align: start;">We are all busy people with the demands of family and work in our lives, this can leave little room for the significant time required to maintain and service a yacht.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; text-align: start;"> <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; text-align: start;">

When your yacht is professionally managed, you can spend your time enjoying the thrill of sailing instead of the time-intensive tasks such as cleaning, repairing and servicing the various components.

You enjoy the good bits and leave the rest to the Yachtshare business.

At the end of your sailing day, you simply lock up your boat and step onto the wharf to start planning your next journey.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

3. Saving the environment.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

Multiple sailors sharing one boat, one marina berth and one set of marina infrastructure is good for the environment and natural resources.

The rise of marinas and marina infrastructure required to service boats places a significant strain on natural resources and the environment.

To build and maintain the many yachts and power-boats requires significant resources and often these boats do nothing but sit in the harbour for most of the year.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

4. Save your relationship

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

There is anecdotal evidence suggesting that couples that sail together stay together.

Sailing a yacht requires teamwork, cooperation, and communication.

Unlike other lifestyle hobbies like golf or tennis, sailing can be enjoyed by couples and brings them closer together.

The negative aspects of boat ownership such as cleaning, repairing and servicing are removed by shared ownership programs meaning your time on the yacht is relaxing and enjoyable for you and your partner.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

5. Save your dreams

You’ve had that dream of getting on a yacht and sailing off into the sunset.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">The reality of household expenses, mortgage repayments, school fees, and retirement savings are major obstacles to achieving this dream.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Shared yacht ownership allows you to realise your dreams without breaking the bank.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Allowing you to start sailing today, instead of 'one day'.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<b style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">6. Try before you buy.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;"> <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

What if your dream boat is not what it's cracked up to be! By purchasing your share in your dream boat through yachtshare, you can spend your days' sea trailing in a variety of weather and sea conditions for the time it takes for you to decide, which boat is right for you and your family. Imagine investing in a brand new boat and find you don't like it, it's not big enough; it's too big, or worst still there is something wrong with the boat and it is now up to you to fix it! Yachtshare takes away this dilemma and when you are ready to move on, you just sell your share right back to Yachtshare or buy your next share in one of the many other boats available.

7. Share your experience

When you Yachtshare, you will find fellow sharers keen to share their experience and sea knowledge. We have been with Yachtshare for a year now and have gained so much knowledge from our fellow sharers than if we were left alone to learn on our own boat. We are invited out on their days and we, in turn, invite them out with us. We have gained a community of like-minded people who we would have never met without Yachtshare.

Adjusting the helm, looking forward past her bow, you can feel her joy as you set her course, gently adjusting the power, easing the main, hauling on the sheet, you feel the excitement as her sail fills with wind. "I may not be able to control the wind, however I can adjust the sails".
When you’re sailing you are outside enjoying the elements… or at least experiencing them. No matter what weather comes your way – from feeling the sun on your back, wind in your hair or rain seeping down your neck – you feel alive and stay on your toes with the changing conditions.Some of the most amazing places and sights we have seen have also been from the rail of our yacht.
The sea and the wind are true natures elements and when you learn how to read these elements you become one with them. It's such a natural and beautiful sport, you are outdoors, you are watching for natural changes, you become aware of things you are not normally aware of when you are on the land. You feel the yacht steady herself, you watch the breeze shift across the waters and adjust the sail to harness the changing wind direction.
I am at the helm, it is 8:00am in Kota Kinabalu marina,

I found the key to start the engine, now to remember where the ignition is without looking like I do not know what I am doing. Found it! The engine turns over, OK, good start. I ask Paul to throw the lines and jump on-board, which he does and I start reversing Port & Starboard and watch horrified as her nose swings so quickly towards the yacht next door. Staying as calm as I could, I swing the tiller in the opposite direction and with a playing card width between two boats I am now out in the middle of the marina and stumble forwards to put the engine into neutral before I slam into the yachts behind me. We lurch forward nearly throwing Paul into the water and we are out of the marina and we motor calmly out to sea.

How did I get here?

It was 9 years ago and my partner at the time and I had sold our lakefront house in Queenstown,

we had decided to buy a yacht and sail the world. After purchase and 2 years sailing the Queensland coast, we were ready for our adventure and signed up with Sail Indonesia joining a sailing rally to Singapore.

From Brisbane, we head north,

travelling via Bamaga and Darwin. On the 21st July, with a big Rally start, all 46 yachts set sail and head north-west to Indonesia, our next rendezvous is Bali. Stopping at Kupang in Timor and anchoring at places like Rote Island, Waingapu and Komodo Island. Once we reach Bali we spend two months on the island and even had the chance to visit Kerobokan jail where we meet the infamous Schapelle Corby and the Bali 9. Overall, Bali was a fabulous experience and the Sail Indonesia Rally really look after us.

We continue our sail north

after discussions about whether we would continue with the Sail Indonesia Rally to Singapore or make our own adventure to the Philippines. We decide on the Philippines, with thoughts of sailing home to Australia via Papua New Guinea from there. In December we arrive at the city of Puerto Princesa, on the island of Palawan located in the South China Sea. We spend the next few weeks exploring the island and enjoying the socialising of the tiny yacht club.

In February of the new year, I left our beautiful yacht and fly home to Brisbane, it would be another 3 years before I was back on board her again.

The yacht is a 38ft Laurie Davidson, designed Cavalier.

Built of triple skin kauri with Glass reinforced overlay, with a 20hp Bukh engine.
She looks sleek and handles like a dream and her tiller steer makes her feel responsive and fast.

My sailing experience

on her had always been as crew. Now back on board with the potential new owner my sailing skills were being very much tested. This sailing expedition had all come about so quickly and very unexpectedly.

We had sold her via E-Bay,
with the purchaser, Paul flying in from Sydney and myself flying in from Brisbane to meet at the Marina in Kota Kinabalu. The next few days would be sea trails and to sail her north to Kudat, where we could lift her out and Paul would be able to inspect her and check she was OK for purchase.

We are now out of the marina and we turn north heading to Kudat.

Navigate! Ah yes, where are those charts! With hope and some hazy memory I plan our route north, deciding to sail to a remote coastal village about 40NM north, so we could anchor in daylight and take stock of our surroundings.

I negotiate a place to anchor late in the afternoon,

which was safe and presented easy escape if the weather changed. I then remembered how the anchoring system worked. Although we have electric windlass I couldn't remember where the 'on' button was. This was soon found, and it was anchors away.

We spend the night in front of a small village,

where it seems the men go out fishing all day and the women and children stay in the remote village. Tonight they were singing as a village and it so enchanting and a little unreal sitting there on the deck listening to this live island music as it travelled across the water to us. As the men returned it soon turned to karaoke and you could sense a feeling of celebration happening.

The next morning, we started the engine and smoke poured out.

Not a good look for my potential and only purchaser. I opened the engine bay immediately saw the exhaust pipe had come away from where it meets the engine to the out point, so now I am crawling in the tiny cavity between the engine and the hull to re-seal the exhaust. Done, whew! and we are on our way.

The winds are from the west,

which is perfect, however, they are very light. We set the jib and the mainsail and watched as the wind eased to a bare 2-3 kts by late afternoon. I am hoping to reach the tip of Borneo today as I am unable to find a good anchorage now and until we passed the tip of Borneo.

The westerly breeze would have blown us on-shore if the anchor did not hold and I was not willing to risk it, even though the breeze was very light. We set about bringing the sails down at sunset and secured the mainsail to the boom. We continued under motor as we headed north. At 8:00pm Paul calls it a night and I kept motoring on. Passing the tip of Borneo at 9:30pm and immediately saw the lead lights for Kudat.

At the tip of Borneo,

we ran into a very strong headwind and cross-currents, which slows our progress. Travelling north we were pushing 6kts and suddenly we are now at 2-3kts. It takes us nearly one and a half hours to travel around the tip of Borneo, where I start my final leg on Port and Starboard into Kudat. It's very dark now, and I am struggling to see all the little fishing boats dotted around. The thought of pirates raises my senses and I am mentally preparing what I will do if any of these little boats try to board my yacht.

As we came round the tip of Borneo

much later than I had anticipated, we struck rough weather and seas. Alone on deck, I am very conscious that I need to stay alert and be vigilant on navigation. The tip of Borneo is notorious for its rocky outcrop and corals that lay just beneath the surface of the ocean. I motor on and can start to see the edge of a large reef.

I have no-one to discuss options with. Do I continue on this course and potentially run into a hidden rock or reef, or do I head further out to sea and become vulnerable to the fishing and possible pirates?

I choose to continue on course

and monitor my charts the best I can with the light I have from a small torch, praying the batteries don't expire! I am on high alert and now I am back thinking about if the Pirates' board, I will jump over and swim ashore. Where this thought comes from I have no idea, it seems very rational right now!

I hear splashes on the foredeck,

there's a boat, they're going to board, what do I do! I still don't believe my ears. I go forward and nearly stumbled as my toe hits the spinnaker pole. I cautiously lean over expecting to see a boat and I am completely relieved as I sight dolphins swimming and diving around my bow. I could cry with relief! They are beautiful and as I watch, I notice they are swimming in a pattern.

They swim alongside the bow and they all swim off to the right. It is mesmerizing.

I race back to the helm and check my charts,

I realise why the dolphins are swimming in this pattern. I have become precariously close to the shelf of the reef. Distracted by thinking about pirates I have not noticed how close we were passing the reef and I swing the yacht away. It was not the pirates I needed to be concerned with, it was the distraction of thinking about them that nearly caused me to run the yacht onto a reef. Thank goodness for those dolphins, they saved me from could have been a very disastrous accident.

I am in a big dilemma of what to do.

I need to anchor in the safety of the Kudat boat yard marina, however there is no way I entering the little marina area in the dark, as it is rocky and I am very unsure of where I would anchor.

There are fishing boats zipping in and out of the harbour entrance without lights and this makes me very nervous, as I have no plans to run into one of them. I consider motoring back and forth in front of the harbour all night until dawn.

I hesitate about turning into Kudat Harbour and first run I motor passed. It's still very dark and I am struggling with tiredness. I realise my plan is ridiculous, I will need to anchor and sleep. I make the decision to enter Kudat Harbour tonight and turn the yacht around and head towards the lead lights into Kudat harbour.

I now have to believe the little fishing boats will see me and zip around me, as I can not see them.

The entrance to Kudat harbor is busy with boats coming and going, some with their lights on and some with their lights off. There are also rocks, shallows, and other dangers I need to be wary of. Am I confident enough to know my position that I will miss these?

I am standing on deck in the dark, tiller in one hand, the chart in the other and it suddenly strikes me, the last few hours and the challenge of the day is all starting to take its toll.

I could make a bad judgment’s as exhaustion sets in.

Not wanting to crash or put a big hole in the side of her as I am now only a few hours away from selling her.

I start my approach into Kudat Harbour

I motor in following the lead lights and I can see all the way to the main town. The lead lights are now becoming blurred with the lights of the town and I hesitate about my decision. I turn away from the town and motor cautiously forward to a small area, where I am out of the way of other boating traffic and prepare to anchor.

I put the yacht into neutral as she slows down I race forward and allow the anchor to tumble from its bed and into the sea below. Racing back I put her into reverse and watch my surroundings to ensure we are secure. Sitting on deck for another 20 minutes to check we are not moving and watching the depth I head below decks and to my cabin and sleep.

Tomorrow is another day

to negotiate the Kudat boatyard and its boatmen!
